Loosen A Stuck Window In Minutes:
Window sashes can get stuck for a variety of reasons. Some are easy to
correct, while others take a little more work. Here's how to remedy
the situation.
Check for nails or screws holding the window shut. A previous owner
might have nailed the window shut for security reasons. Look
carefully, if the nails or screws have been in place for a while,
they may be painted over. Remove any nails or screws that you find.
Inspect both the inside and outside of the frame to make sure the
window isn't painted shut. Loosen windows that are painted shut by
running a sharp utility knife all around the edge of the window sash
where it meets the jamb, both inside and outside.
Once you get the window open, take an old paint brush and wipe out
any loose dirt. Use a regular household cleanser to remove dirt and
grime that may gum up the window track. You may need to use a piece
of sandpaper to lightly sand off old thick paint that is getting in
the way. Apply a light spray of WD40 or other spray lubricant to the
tracks. If you prefer you could take an old candle or bar of soap
and run it up and down the tracks a few times to help the window
slide.
